Cakes and lawn bowling

Probably a final mention for Sterchis. We did in fact make a special visit to Filey on Thursday last week to buy cakes there for the final time.

Not surprisingly many people had placed orders and, although we were there by mid morning, only a limited number of cakes were left. We bought about a dozen that are now safe in the freezer. One can only hope that the actual baker, who I believe is the son of the owners, sets up his own business or makes those fantastic cakes for someone else. If he does and he wants a website, I will design it for him for free (plus some cakes) just for keeping the cakes going.

Staying with cakes, our local bowling club (of the crown green variety) is hosting a biggish competition this Sunday. All the catering is provided by the club members and this will mean that Jean and Beryl will be making some of their incredible cakes and selling them by the slice. Last year I got through six different slices during the day and took a further two home for the evening. This year I will attempt to exceed that achievement (provided that the same types of cakes are there and my greed passes by unnoticed).

Amazingly, several people have suggested that I actually compete in the competition in question, however my knowledge of the complete humiliation that would result if this were to be the case means that I will be a spectator. My next door neighbour will however be in the event and, having been a losing finalist in a similar competition last week, he and his playing partner will be amongst the favourites.

Moving away from cakes, but staying with the bowling (this time of the flat lawn green variety), we paid a few visits to Filey bowling club during our week at the East coast earlier this month. Many thanks to the numerous members there who were friendly and encouraging and who gave us a good grounding in the game and how it is played (Tim and the captain in particular). It would be hard to come across a nicer group of people and their club, in all respects, was a credit to them and their hardworking captain/green keeper. Hopefully we will be in a position to move to Filey at some point in the not too distant future and when we do we will definitely apply for membership. We will of course also have to join a crown green club and we also met a member of Hunmamby CGBC whilst on our coastal travels.

Finally, ever thought about visiting Dublin? It is a really great city with a fantastic and friendly atmosphere and you can find out all about it here http://www.dublinweekendbreak.net. This site includes everything from sightseeing recommendation through to information about travelling there and finding the best or most economical accommodation.
